Trump Mobile has announced that it has started delivering its T1 smartphones priced at $499 to customers, after delays of several months beyond the originally planned release date in August for the gold-colored device.

This mobile phone company, launched last year by the Trump Organization under a brand licensing agreement, had postponed the release of the T1 first to October, then to this week, as questions arose about the feasibility of manufacturing a low-cost smartphone in the United States.

“Pre-ordered phones are starting to be delivered to customers this week,” said Pat O’Brien, CEO of Trump Mobile, in a statement to Reuters. He explained that the delay in the launch was due to the need to go through several development and testing stages to ensure that the phone components met quality standards.

The T1 Phone, in gold color, features a 6.78-inch screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a triple camera system, a 5,000 mAh battery, and operates on Android.

The company did not disclose the number of pre-ordered or shipped phones, citing competitive reasons, but indicated that they plan to fulfill pending orders in the coming weeks.

Trump Mobile entered the highly competitive U.S. mobile phone market as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), offering services through existing operators’ infrastructure at a monthly price of $47.45, referencing the fact that Donald Trump was the 45th and 47th president of the United States.

This launch has been closely scrutinized by ethics experts and lawmakers, as the company uses the Trump name while the president is still in office. Democrats have questioned T-Mobile about its relationship with the Trump brand and expressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

A White House spokesperson stated that there are no conflicts of interest and that the president’s assets are managed by his children in a trust.

Industry analysts have also raised questions about Trump Mobile’s claims regarding domestic manufacturing. The company initially presented the T1 as a “designed and made in the USA” phone, despite a lack of significant smartphone manufacturing infrastructure in the U.S.

Mr. O’Brien stated that the initial T1 devices were “assembled in the USA” and that the company’s ultimate goal is to market a phone where most components are manufactured in the U.S.
