Midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Atletico Madrid should miss out on the World Cup after injuring his ankle.
The American player will have to undergo surgery after suffering a severe sprain to his right ankle, as announced by his club on Monday, which will likely cause him to miss the World Cup.
The 24-year-old player experienced a “sprain with joint damage” during training last Thursday, the club’s statement added, without specifying the duration of Cardoso’s unavailability.
However, it is almost certain that the New Jersey native, who has 23 caps with “Team USA,” will not be able to participate in the World Cup starting exactly in a month (June 11-July 19), in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Known as “Johnny,” real name Joao Lucas de Souza Cardoso, who has played 15 matches in La Liga this season with the Colchoneros (12 starts), “will have to undergo surgery to be treated for the injury to his right ankle,” continued the club, wishing their player a “prompt and complete recovery.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s players will kick off the competition on June 12 against Paraguay in Los Angeles (group D).
