The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, criticized an unidentified American on May 7 for allegedly offering $200,000 to Greenlanders to sign a petition in favor of the autonomous Danish territory being annexed to the United States.

“A foreigner offering money for a signature to annex Greenland to another country is not only profoundly disturbing, it’s indecent,” Nielsen expressed his outrage on Facebook. Greenlandic television station KNR reported that a mysterious American known as “Cliff” offered $200,000 to a taxi driver in Nuuk, the Greenlandic capital, to sign the petition.

Taxi driver Danny Brandt rejected the offer and reported the incident to the police after sharing the story on social media. Another social media user also mentioned being offered money to sign the petition. The Greenlandic police acknowledged receiving reports related to the current political situation but did not disclose the details. “We are a democratic society. Our future is not negotiated in a taxi, and it’s not bought with money,” emphasized the Prime Minister.

President Donald Trump has previously suggested annexing the autonomous Danish territory as a measure for national security. In January, after aggressive rhetoric, Trump backtracked and announced a framework agreement on Greenland with NATO’s Secretary-General. However, the specifics of this agreement remain unclear, and discussions between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States regarding the Arctic region’s future are ongoing.
