A relative calm prevailed near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, after several days of sporadic clashes, as the United States awaited Iran’s response to their latest proposals to end over two months of fighting and engage in peace talks.

Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated on Friday that Washington expected a response within a few hours. However, a day later, there was no indication of movement from Tehran regarding this proposal, which would formally end the war before negotiations on more contentious issues, such as the Iranian nuclear program, could begin.

Rubio met with Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in Miami on Saturday. They discussed the need to continue their cooperation “to deter threats and promote stability and security in the Middle East,” said Tommy Pigott, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, in a statement.

The statement did not specifically mention Iran.

A Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier was heading towards the strait on Saturday en route to Pakistan, according to LSEG maritime data. Some sources suggest that this movement was approved by Iran to bolster trust with Qatar and Pakistan, both mediators in the conflict.

If successful, this transit would mark the first passage of a Qatari LNG ship through the strait since the onset of hostilities.

As President Donald Trump prepares to visit China next week, pressure is mounting to end this conflict, which has roiled energy markets and posed an increasing threat to the global economy.

Recent days have seen the most intense tensions in and around the strait since a ceasefire was implemented a month ago, with the UAE being targeted in new attacks on Friday.
