The reputation of the United States continues to decline. For the second consecutive year, the perception of the United States globally is deteriorating, according to the annual study by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation published this Friday.
The democracy perception index, rated from -100% to +100%, has dropped by 16% in the United States, compared to +22% two years ago, placing them behind Russia (-11%) and China (+7%).
“The rapid decline in the image of the United States in the world is regrettable but not surprising,” explained Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the founder of the Alliance and former NATO secretary-general, as reported by Reuters.
To justify this image degradation, the study mentions the policies of President Donald Trump, including “questioning NATO,” “generalizing tariffs,” and “threatening invasion of Greenland.”
Additional factors contributing to this decline include the reduction of American aid to Ukraine within less than 12 months, the American-Israeli war against Iran, and the surge in oil prices.
According to the study, the United States was also the third most frequently cited country in response to which country represents the greatest threat to the world, after Russia and Israel.
This report was conducted by the polling institute Nira Data between March 19 and April 21 among more than 94,000 people in 98 countries. The perception of countries was measured with a sample of 46,600 people in 85 countries. The report was published before the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, scheduled for May 12.
