The United States and Iran could resume their discussions as early as next week in Islamabad, according to information from the Wall Street Journal published on Friday, as mediators try to revive a diplomatic process aimed at ending the conflict.

According to the American newspaper, the two parties are currently working on a one-page memorandum with 14 points, which would serve as a framework for a month-long negotiation cycle.

The document being prepared would address the Iranian nuclear program, easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the future of Iranian stocks of highly enriched uranium, which could be transferred to another country. However, several sensitive issues remain unresolved.

The question of a possible easing of American sanctions continues to divide negotiators and could complicate the progress of discussions, the Wall Street Journal notes. If the talks progress, the initial one-month period could be extended by mutual agreement.

Regional tensions escalated sharply after the strikes launched on February 28 by the United States and Israel against Iran, followed by Iranian responses and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage for global oil and gas transportation.

A ceasefire negotiated by Pakistan went into effect on April 8, but a first session of discussions held in Islamabad on April 11 did not lead to a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended by President Donald Trump, without a specific deadline.

Since April 13, Washington has also imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in this highly strategic waterway.
