Between the war in Iran and the Epstein case, there are many points of friction between the United Kingdom and the United States, which are tarnishing the longstanding relationship between the two countries. Winston Churchill referred to them as a “special relationship.”

“A special relationship.” That’s how Winston Churchill, former British Prime Minister, described the ties between the UK and the United States in 1946. Last year at the White House, Keir Starmer handed Donald Trump a letter from King Charles III: “It is an invitation for a second state visit. It is truly special, as it is unprecedented. I believe it reflects the strength of our relationship.”
But in recent months, the relationship has not been smooth sailing. For example, in January, Keir Starmer completely dismissed the US President’s trade threats towards European countries regarding his desire to acquire Greenland.
Another point of contention is the war in Iran. After questioning the legitimacy of the conflict, London restricted Washington’s use of its bases in the Indian Ocean, which angered Donald Trump: “Keir Starmer is no Winston Churchill. The UK has been very uncooperative. It is very sad to see that the relationship is clearly not what it used to be.”
Recently, the White House tenant expressed regret over the tense diplomatic atmosphere: “It was by far the strongest relationship, and now we have very strong relationships with other countries in Europe.” During his visit to the United States, King Charles III will try to ease tensions between London and Washington. Last year, the American President described his last visit to the country as one of the greatest honors of his life.
