For Canada, its economic ties with the United States are weaknesses to be corrected.

In a video address posted on YouTube on Sunday, April 19, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about Ottawa’s relations with Washington. “The world is more dangerous and more divided than before. The United States has changed its reaction. Their approach to trade has shifted,” Mark Carney asserts, criticizing the weapon of tariffs used by the Trump administration. “This increase in tariffs is unprecedented since the Great Depression,” he denounces, adding, “Our traditional strengths, which relied on close ties with America, are now weaknesses. We must act.”

This language was also criticized by the conservative camp, as reported by the Toronto Star. According to the Premier of Prince Edward Island, Rob Lantz, “it is pointless to alienate our partners with whom we negotiate.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 21, Ottawa, which says it is working to “create a new economic and security relationship with the United States,” announced the establishment of a new Advisory Committee on economic relations between Canada and the United States. The organization, led by Minister of International Trade Dominic LeBlanc, consists of 24 members from various sectors.
