The upcoming program for King Charles III and Queen consort Camilla seems busy. As the British sovereign’s state visit to the United States approaches, a clarification on the dress code for the famous garden party could disrupt the royal couple’s habits.
Donald Trump is leaving no detail to chance. To properly welcome his distinguished guest and befitting his rank, the U.S. President has pulled out all the stops. The agenda includes an informal private meeting in the Oval Office upon King Charles III’s arrival on April 27, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence, official visits, a speech before Congress, and, before the traditional state banquet, the British sovereign and his wife, Queen consort Camilla, will attend a garden party!
Only a select group of carefully chosen guests are invited to this reception in honor of the king. According to the Daily Beast, the garden party will take place at the British ambassador’s residence, much to the delight of the sovereign. However, an unexpected detail might surprise him. Upon inspecting one of the invitations, our colleagues across the Atlantic noticed a specific dress code requirement: “Hats not recommended.” This is surprising considering that this reception is held in honor of King Charles III and especially given the British royal family’s well-known love for headgear! Guests have also been advised to wear suits for gentlemen and day dresses for ladies.
The visit of King Charles III to the United States is his first visit in a tense atmosphere. While it is an event for Americans and an honor for Donald Trump, who has openly shown admiration and affection for the sovereign, this trip also takes place in a hostile geopolitical context. The conflict in the Middle East has been raging for weeks, and the U.S. President apparently did not appreciate the British Prime Minister’s decision not to participate. Trump’s recent statements have not hidden his negative feelings towards Sir Keir Starmer. These repeated attacks have shocked a large part of the British public. According to a survey reported by the Daily Mail, many people in the UK view the king’s trip to the United States in a very negative light.
