In the United States, music at full blast while driving leads to deadly accidents by Jean-Baptiste Roch Published on April 21st, 2026 at 08:00

A Harvard study has revealed a 15% increase in deadly road accidents on the days when albums of pop and rap stars are released in the US. The distractions, manipulation of smartphones, and high sound volume from listening are the contributing factors.

The idea for this research came from Vishal Patel, an academic involved in the study. While driving, he received a text message from his wife sharing a newly released song. Patel scrolled through songs on his phone, listened to a new track, let his mind wander, engrossed by the music and the screen of his smartphone… Seconds later, when he looked up, he realized, horrified, that he was driving on the left lane. “I realized that an additional fraction of a second with my eyes glued to my phone could have led to a serious accident,” he said. “I thought that if millions of people were doing the same thing as me at the same time – on the day of an important album release – the cumulative risk on the road must be enormous.”

The study found a correlation between increased listens on the days of the top ten most streamed albums between 2017 and 2022, the rise in fatal accidents on the same dates, and the profiles of the drivers involved (mostly sober, alone, younger than average, and with a mobile phone). On average, 139 fatal accidents were observed on album release days in the US, an increase of 18 deaths compared to the 121 recorded in the ten days before and after these releases. Overall, the number of road accidents on each of these popular music album release days increased by 15% compared to previous years. External factors, such as festive or seasonal events that could have biased the verdict, were ruled out.

Previous studies before music streaming had already highlighted a higher number of road accidents in the US, being more common on days like tax filing days due to stress and anxiety. The impact of a new album release by Celine Dion, coupled with the anxiety of tax matters, could be devastating. The bottom line? Between listening to Celine and driving, it’s better to choose wisely.
