Former staff member accuses California gubernatorial candidate of rape
Former Democratic congressman Eric Swalwell announced on Monday that he would resign from his position in Congress after allegations of rape and inappropriate behavior surfaced in the American press. “I am deeply sorry to my family, my team, and my constituents for the errors in judgment I have made in the past. I will defend myself against the serious and false allegations against me. However, I must take responsibility and accept the mistakes I have made,” he said in a statement.
According to information published by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, a former staff member of Eric Swalwell accused the congressman of raping her while she was heavily intoxicated, leaving her covered in bruises and blood.
The Democratic lawmaker, who was among the favorites to succeed California Governor Gavin Newsom, had already suspended his campaign on Sunday evening.
