“We must not lie to the French people, hybrid wars or direct wars will multiply,” also stated Sébastien Lecornu during the government’s question and answer session.

“We are facing a crisis of imported inflation on energy.” Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu spoke about the war in the Middle East on Tuesday, May 19, at the National Assembly during the government’s question and answer session. “All scenarios are on the table in geopolitics,” he said in response to a question from the leader of the Horizons deputies, Laurent Marcangeli, asking the French people to “prepare” for a possible “resumption of fighting.”

“Armed operations in the entire region inevitably create expenses, impacts on public finances that were obviously not anticipated when we voted on the budget.”

“It’s a war. (…) The six billion euros that we have budgeted will need to be updated, obviously, in the coming days,” he announced, promising to revisit “transparently.” Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday regarding the economic consequences of the war in the Middle East.

On April 21, the government announced that six billion euros of expenses could be halted to offset the cost of this conflict, following a meeting on public finances at Bercy. Sébastien Lecornu had then instructed his government to implement “an additional four billion euros in spending reduction measures” within ministry budgets, in a letter addressed to his ministers.
