For four days, the Sidobre will undergo a transformation. Shots, drones, military convoys, and soldiers in combat gear will take over several municipalities around Castres as part of a vast exercise by the 8th RPIMa. A spectacular and unusual real-life operation. Here’s what you need to know.

During these four days, the usual calm of Sidobre is set to be disrupted. Military in combat gear, drones flying overhead, and blank shots will be part of the scene. From May 18 to 21, the 8th RPIMa of Castres is organizing the “FTX Ulysses” exercise for the first time, a large training operation in open terrain in several municipalities around Castres.

Over 300 soldiers will be mobilized for this military maneuver mainly in the Sidobre area. The municipalities involved include Castres, Burlats, Brassac, Lacrouzette, Vabre, and Roquecourbe. The Castres regiment will be supported by the national gendarmerie and a detachment from the 17th artillery regiment.

The experience promises to be unusual for the residents. At certain times of the day, columns of military vehicles may pass through the villages, accompanied by blank shots in the exercise areas. Drones will also be used for observation and reconnaissance missions. An almost surreal atmosphere in a territory usually known for its granite chaos, forests, and rural tranquility.

Behind this action movie-like setting, the objective remains very serious: to prepare units to intervene in conditions close to reality. The concept of “open terrain” allows the soldiers to train in a live environment with its constraints, relief, and traffic routes.

The Tarn region has become a real training ground for the French Army in recent years. In 2023, the Orion exercise – described as the largest military exercise in France in over thirty years – had already made an impact in Castres. Spectacular operations involving hundreds of soldiers temporarily transformed the territory into a conflict simulation zone. The event had aroused as much curiosity as astonishment among the locals.

With “FTX Ulysses,” the scale is smaller, but the visual impact promises to be just as striking. Aware of the possible impact on residents, the 8th RPIMa assures that several specific measures have been put in place: systematic collection of shooting waste, waste sorting, closure of barriers and gates after troops pass, and a ban on shooting near livestock. A dispute resolution unit will also be active throughout the exercise period to quickly address any complaints.

For a few days, the Sidobre will trade its image of a peaceful haven for that of a vast military operation terrain. An unusual interlude that is unlikely to go unnoticed.

Context: The 8th RPIMa is a regiment of the French Army specializing in airborne operations.
