A new victory for Kiev. According to information from Le Parisien, a Russian radar called Yastreb was destroyed by the Ukrainian army in the Belgorod region, Russia. The radar was considered the “eye” of the Russian artillery, as it could detect Ukrainian and Ukraine’s allies’ shots in just a few seconds. It had the ability to guide the Russian artillery. The Ukrainian army stated that one of these radars was destroyed only a few kilometers from Kharkiv, Ukraine.
“In the night of May 14, 2026, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces targeted several important Russian occupiers’ sites,” explained the Ukrainian Armed Forces headquarters on Facebook. According to the Ukrainian army, a Russian anti-aircraft missile system called “Tor” was also hit.
A particularly expensive system
According to the Ukrainian site Defense Express, cited by Le Parisien, this Yastreb radar system is part of the new generation systems. It has the ability to analyze the trajectory of shells or rockets, then precisely locate enemy cannons. Subsequently, the Russian army can conduct “counter-battery” strikes against the Ukrainian army. Destroying a radar system temporarily blinds certain units of the Russian army.
For the Ukrainian army, this is also a victory due to the particularly high price of this type of radar, and its rarity. The value of such a system is estimated at around 50 million dollars. In June 2025, Ukraine had already destroyed a 1K148 “Yastreb-AV”, and in March 2026, a second one, thanks to drone operators far beyond the front line, in the Luhansk region, Ukraine.
