An increase in the number of small ships in recent days: Is Iran still the master of the Strait of Hormuz with its fast boats?

United States claims that Iran’s naval capabilities have been drastically reduced.

  • Indeed, Iran dominates the Strait of Hormuz with its mosquito fleet and other fast boats.
  • Our journalist William de Lesseux provides an update on LCI.

Over the past few days, the number of Iranian small boats in the Strait of Hormuz has reportedly risen. A specialized site detected as many as 333 in the area, compared to just around sixty the previous week.

“Satellite images allow us to locate them but not to track them precisely. Over a hundred ships operate in the north. They act primarily, their number remains stable,” details our journalist William de Lesseux on LCI, in a segment to be found in the video at the top of this article.

And he continues: “But it’s in the middle of the strait that we observe an increase in the number of small ships in recent days. It’s as if Iran has decided on a broader, more dispersed, more offensive deployment.” The United States, however, disagrees with this data and reports a decrease in the number of fast boats.

Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Guards have announced allowing over 30 ships to pass. They are mostly Chinese, due to the close relations between the two countries. A Japanese tanker and another Panamanian-flagged vessel have also been authorized to pass through.
