Donald Trump has revealed the United States’ ongoing economic turmoil is playing no role in his negotiations with Iran.
During the Tuesday, May 12, broadcast of CNN, the president was filmed outside the White House as he prepared to board Air Force One. Moments before departing on his trip to China, he paused to address reporters gathered outside.
Among the questions posed, Trump was asked about the nation’s economic condition and its potential influence on his continuing discussions with Iran – a response that left many stunned when he flatly denied any connection.
The candid reply followed a reporter’s question, “When you’re negotiating with Iran Mr. President, what extent are Americans’ financial situations motivating you to make a deal?”
Trump responded bluntly, “Not even a little bit. The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran: they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” before adding, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations. I don’t think about anybody.”

He concluded firmly, “I think about one thing: we can not let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s it. That’s the only thing that motivates me.”
In recent months, Americans have experienced rising inflation across multiple sectors of the economy, a trend widely attributed to the continued blockage of the Strait of Hormuz and the stalled diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States.
Earlier that same day, anchor Boris Sanchez presented figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing that U.S. prices climbed 0.6% in April, pushing the yearly inflation rate to 3.8 percent.
“Americans are feeling the pinch just about everywhere,” he noted.

The data breakdown indicated gasoline prices surged 5.4%, airfare jumped 2.8%, grocery costs rose 0.7% and shelter expenses increased 0.6%.
A recent CNN poll captured Americans expressing their frustrations, with one respondent stating, “It’s more expensive to exist.”
On Saturday, February 28, the U.S. and Israel conducted initial military operations against Iran, resulting in the deaths of several Iranian officials, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump confirmed the Iranian leader’s death while emphasizing that U.S. operations in Iran would continue.
Via his Truth Social platform, he explained, “The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!”
Speaking at Trump National Doral shortly after operations commenced, the president predicted the conflict would conclude “very soon.” Nevertheless, he indicated the campaign would proceed “until the enemy is totally and decisively defeated.”
Despite a ceasefire currently in effect, the U.S. and Iran have not yet reached an agreement.
