In mathematics, economics, legal culture, and managerial culture, BTS (higher technician’s certificate) candidates must pass written exams every year, regardless of their specialization.

Just days before the exams (from May 18th to 21st), the Ministry of Higher Education has revealed the theme that will be studied for the 2027 session of the general culture and expression test.

As a reminder, the general culture and expression exam lasts 4 hours and is divided into two distinct parts: “Document synthesis” and “Personal writing.” In the second part, the candidate must respond to a question related to the theme, drawing on their knowledge, works studied in class, and current events.

The theme for 2027, “The truth of falsehood,” echoes the digital news of the day with increased information warfare, the rise of virtual reality, fake news, deepfakes, and artificial intelligence.

The issue defined by the Ministry, as published in the Official Bulletin, highlights the fluctuation between reality and fiction in our daily lives, citing the use of generative artificial intelligences capable of creating speeches and images with no guarantee of accuracy.

The theme also addresses the concept of “post-truth” and the challenge of distinguishing information from misinformation or propaganda. It explores the idea of hyperreality, previously theorized by Umberto Eco in the 1970s, where the artificial world ends up replacing reality.

The theme not only encompasses information but also touches on the realm of consumerism, where fake leather, imitation jewelry, counterfeit currency, and cultural boundaries come into question. It is a broad theme for BTS students.

The Ministry has provided an indicative bibliography covering various fields, from classic literature to pop culture.

Candidates are expected to master certain expressions to distinguish between the true and the false, the lie-true, vivid metaphor, noble lie, Cinema, illusions, discernment, to name a few. The 2027 candidates will need to demonstrate their discernment in a year of presidential elections, not just by exposing falsehoods but also by understanding how fiction, in different forms, can paradoxically reveal a truth.
