Unprecedented defense efforts and new economic chapters: Emmanuel Macron to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Armenia

Armenia, nestled between Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia, and Turkey (where the border remains closed), is banking on peace to develop its land, energy, and commercial connections and move out of isolation.

French President Emmanuel Macron concluded a state visit to Armenia by signing a partnership and contracts to intensify a dense bilateral relationship. France, home to one of the largest Armenian diasporas with 400,000 people, has a long history of friendship with the three million inhabitants of this Francophile country.

During his visit, Macron was warmly received with expressions of sympathy from top state officials to onlookers applauding him in the streets of Erevan. This unique relationship highlighted historical ties and cultural connections between the two nations.

France has consistently supported Armenia amid its deadly struggle with Azerbaijan post the fall of the USSR in 1991. Macron praised Armenia’s decision to align with Europe despite warnings from Russia, solidifying their bond through various agreements and partnerships.

Armenia’s order of 36 Caesar cannons in 2024 symbolizes a new era of regional cooperation, positioning the Caucasus at a crossroads between Europe and Asia. Strategic defense efforts, defense cooperation, and economic agreements were highlighted during Macron’s visit, with prospects for French radar systems, soldier training, and transportation contracts on the horizon.

Macron paid respects at a memorial for Armenian massacres, visited cultural sites, and signed further cooperation agreements before concluding his visit to Gyumri, a city affected by a devastating earthquake in 1988.
