Why have the United Arab Emirates been targeted by Iran since the beginning of the war?

The United Arab Emirates have been a prime target since the start of the war on February 28, more so than Israel. The air defense system intercepted 15 missiles on May 4, drones caused a fire at an oil site, and three people were injured.

While Iran claimed it had no intention of targeting the UAE, recent events indicate a growing rift due to the UAE’s closer ties to Israel. The UAE has been condemned for its evolving relationship with the State of Israel, with strong economic, security, and military partnerships now considered a strategic alliance.

Once a key player in circumventing international sanctions to support Iran, the UAE now views Iran as a regional threat. Recent reports suggest the UAE has been utilizing Israeli defense systems, marking a shift in defense strategies.

Iran’s aim to divide Gulf countries and exacerbate tensions, particularly between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, has intensified. The UAE’s decision to exit OPEC and manage its oil production independently, distancing itself from Saudi control, symbolizes this rivalry.

Diverging on energy and regional dominance, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have contrasting stances on Iranian attacks. While Riyadh prioritizes diplomacy, the UAE takes a harder stance, criticizing Gulf nations for passivity.

Targeting the UAE is a risky move for Iran, as it risks disrupting oil supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to inviting potential retaliation from neighboring countries, possibly leading to renewed military operations involving Israel and the US.
