Samantha Vinograd, a CBS News national security contributor, appeared on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” and stated that the country is currently facing its most complex threat environment in history.
She mentioned that despite extensive preparation by law enforcement and intelligence professionals for events like the recent attack, the security measures in place may not be sufficient in the current environment.
Former deputy director of the Secret Service and CBS News law enforcement analyst, A.T. Smith, emphasized the need for a thorough examination of how the suspected gunman was able to bring two firearms near the ballroom where the attack took place, despite being a guest at the Washington Hilton.
Vinograd expressed hope that the incident serves as a wake-up call for both law enforcement to consider additional security measures for similar events and for the public to take responsibility by reporting any signs of violence in others.
She emphasized the importance of every individual being mindful of their words and actions, as they can have a significant impact.
