Two American soldiers taking part in an international military exercise went missing on Saturday, May 2, in southern Morocco and are being sought, the Moroccan and American armies announced on Sunday. The two soldiers were participating in the 22nd edition of “African Lion 2026,” a military exercise organized by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces in partnership with the US Armed Forces, launched on Monday.
“Two American soldiers participating in African Lion 2026 went missing on May 2, 2026 around 9 p.m., at Cap Draa cliff, in the Tan-Tan region”, the Moroccan army announced on Facebook on Sunday. “The Moroccan, American, and other participating countries’ forces in the exercise (…) have also launched coordinated search and rescue operations, involving land, air, and maritime resources,” it added in a statement.
On their part, the US Africa Command stated that an investigation had been opened to determine the circumstances of this disappearance.
