A 40-year-old soldier from Montauban, who had deployed multiple times on operations, was killed in an attack in southern Lebanon. The soldier, who was in a civil partnership and a father of two children, lost his life during an assault on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Another French soldier has been killed in the Middle East conflict after Adjudant-Chef Arnaud Frion was killed in Iraqi Kurdistan on March 14. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has blamed Hezbollah for the attack and demanded that Lebanese authorities immediately apprehend the perpetrators.
During a routine patrol, the soldier was attacked in the village of Ghanduriyah while clearing explosives to reconnect with isolated UNIFIL positions. The soldier succumbed to direct gunfire, while three of his comrades were wounded, two severely, and evacuated.
Florian Montorio, originally from Montauban, had served in various foreign missions over his 19-year military career, displaying exemplary courage and leadership qualities. He was known for his remarkable physical and intellectual abilities, exceptional composure, and outstanding command skills.
The Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, praised Montorio’s dedication to defending peace, fighting terrorism, and protecting his fellow citizens. The soldier’s death has sparked tributes from various officials and organizations, acknowledging his sacrifice and commitment to serving his country.
Local officials and community members in Montauban and Valence-d’Agen, where Montorio was well-known, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the soldier, emphasizing his kindness and contributions to the community. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the sacrifices made by military personnel, especially those from the 17th Engineer Regiment of Montauban.
