On Monday, April 13th, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng met with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico, who was on an official visit to Vietnam.

During the meeting, the Vietnamese Prime Minister highlighted the strong traditional friendship between Vietnam and Slovakia, built over more than 76 years of relations characterized by constant support and mutual cooperation.

He emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening relations with traditional partners, including Slovakia, viewed as a priority partner in Central and Eastern Europe.

On the economic front, the two leaders acknowledged that bilateral trade had reached around $1.78 billion in 2025 but still fell short of the existing potential. They agreed to make economic, trade, and investment cooperation a central pillar, aiming to double trade in the coming years leveraging their respective positions as gateways to the EU and ASEAN markets.

They also discussed expanding cooperation in key sectors such as defense, security, transnational crime prevention, energy, education, culture, tourism, health, and climate change mitigation.

Finally, a joint statement was issued elevating Vietnam-Slovakia relations to a “strategic partnership,” marking a historic milestone in bilateral relations. Additionally, the Slovak Prime Minister extended an invitation to his Vietnamese counterpart to make an official visit to Slovakia, which was accepted.
