It is the elevator club of French football: the improbable series of FC Metz, which never ends with promotions and relegations

On the evening of the 32nd day of Ligue 1, FC Metz suffered relegation to the lower division. This extends the club’s improbable series of yo-yoing between leagues.

A year ago, when FC Metz secured promotion to Ligue 1, skeptics joked that they would be back in the second division by spring 2026. The joke became reality as the team is now returning to Ligue 2.

By losing at home to AS Monaco (1-2) on the 32nd day of Ligue 1, FC Metz officially confirmed their relegation. They cannot catch up to the team in the playoff spot Auxerre, who have a nine-point lead with two games left.

Additionally, FC Nantes’ victory over Marseille (3-0) confirmed Metz’s last-place finish in the championship. With only three wins all season, they have failed to achieve their goal of staying in the top division.

The “elevator club” label sticks as FC Metz continues swapping between divisions. This season marks the fifth time they have moved up or down since 2022.

Since 2000, FC Metz has experienced a total of 17 movements between different leagues, demonstrating a history of promotions and relegations. They have managed to stay in Ligue 1 on five occasions.

The team’s rollercoaster journey over the past two decades includes multiple promotions to Ligue 1 and immediate relegations back to Ligue 2, creating a unique cycle that has persisted in the current season with another relegation.
