What is the philosophy of Real Sociedad’s academy? We aim to develop players from the local province and have close ties with French Basque Country. Is it usual to train French players from the Basque region or San Sebastian area? Yes, having French players is normal for us. There is a rule allowing players residing within 50 km of the border to play if the training center is also within 50 km. This includes Bayonne, Anglet, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz, Hendaye. We’ve always had players from this area.

Do many supporters from French Basque Country back Real Sociedad? For many fans, it’s easier to attend professional matches in San Sebastian than travelling to Toulouse or Bordeaux. What legacy does Griezmann leave at the club? Griezmann’s time at Real Sociedad is remembered positively for his development under the club’s care. Real Sociedad is proud to have played a role in Griezmann’s journey to the top level.

Facing Griezmann in the Copa del Rey final, is it a special moment? Playing against Griezmann and Le Normand in the final is a unique experience. While sentimental, the focus remains on winning the match.

Is this French connection unique for a club on the border? Real Sociedad’s bond with France showcases perseverance, work, and humility from the start. The example set by players like Griezmann at Zubieta demonstrates determination and a strong work ethic.

Can you elaborate on the number of French players past and present at Real Sociedad? The team includes seven French players, mainly from French Basque Country, following different academic paths. The emotional and sporting connection to France extends beyond these seven to other players with varying degrees of connection. Over the past decade, there have been between 7 to 10 French players per season, showing a historical link with France.
