What is the philosophy of Real Sociedad’s academy? We aim to develop players from the local province and have close ties with French Basque Country. Regulations allow us to work with young French players who live near the border. France is a territory where Real Sociedad must pay attention, given the player profiles we need.
Is it usual to train French players from the Basque region or San Sebastian area? Yes, having French players is normal for us. There is a rule allowing players residing within 50 km of the border to play if the training center is also within 50 km. This includes Bayonne, Anglet, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz, Hendaye. We’ve always had players from this area.
Do many supporters from French Basque Country back Real Sociedad? For many fans, it’s easier to attend professional matches in San Sebastian than travelling to Toulouse or Bordeaux. The proximity of the First and Second Division games contributes to their passion for football. Shared culture also plays a role in attracting French fans to support Real Sociedad.
Is there a different profile between French and Spanish players? There used to be a perception of French players as more technical and physically stronger, while Spanish players were more tactical and organized. However, these differences are fading.
