Cannes 2026: Sexy dress, sneakers and bow ties… the dress code has become a headache

Every year, the Cannes Film Festival transforms the Croisette into an open-air fashion show. But since the tightening of the dress code in 2025, celebrities must comply with a very strict charter to walk the red carpet. Prohibition of nudity, limitation of XXL trains, and banning of sneakers. The famous Cannes dress code is still a hot topic at the 2026 Cannes edition.

After the opening ceremony on Tuesday, May 12, several outfits have sparked reactions. Some stars have followed the festival’s instructions to the letter. Others have tried to push the boundaries set by the organization. But one thing is certain, this year again, finding the perfect look to climb the steps seems to be a real headache.

Strict rules for climbing the steps of the Cannes Film Festival 2026

In its “Festivalgoer Charter” updated for 2026, the Cannes Film Festival reminds that gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière require an “evening wear”. Women are therefore invited to wear a long dress, a cocktail dress, or even a little black dress. Men should opt for a tuxedo or a black or navy suit with a bow tie or dark tie.

The regulations also emphasize several specific prohibitions. “Outfits, especially long trains, which volume hinders the proper circulation of guests and complicates seating in the room, are not allowed,” specify the organizers. Even the shoes are monitored. Sneakers are officially banned on the red carpet.

Between glamour and rebellion, stars blur the lines

Despite these detailed rules, some celebrities discreetly continue to defy Cannes protocol. Last year, Halle Berry had to change her outfit after the late announcement of new restrictions. Heidi Klum had made an impact with her Elie Saab dress with an XXL train, perceived as a provocative response to the rules.

This year again, several personalities seem to have flirted with the limits imposed by the festival. Very sexy dresses, imposing volumes, or accessories considered too casual. The debate around the dress code continues to stir the Croisette. If Cannes now wants to return to “elegance and sobriety,” some stars still prefer to rely on audacity to attract attention. A risky strategy… The charter clearly states that “the festival’s welcoming teams will be required to deny access to the steps to people who do not comply with these rules”.
