The Font-Romeu casino hosted an evening dedicated to Caravaggio, featuring a presentation of his work and a film screening.

Organized by the association Émergence, in partnership with the Ciné-Club Cerdagne Capcir, the event offered a dual focus on artistic enlightenment and a film screening centered around the master of chiaroscuro.

A dive into Caravaggio’s work

From 6 pm, an intervention led by Alexandre Charrett-Dykes, a doctor in art history, provided insights into the Italian painter’s work within its historical and aesthetic context. The approach, dense and lively, outlined the major milestones of Caravaggio’s career, from his beginnings in Milan to his death in Porto Ercole in 1610.

The speaker emphasized the significant break the painter represents in the history of European painting. “There is a before and after Caravaggio,” he summarized, referring to a body of work grounded in radical naturalism, violent light contrasts, and a representation of religious figures without idealization.

This approach, both admired and hotly contested in his time, deeply impacted the 17th century and influenced many European artists. Caravaggio’s life journey, as discussed at the event, is inseparable from a tumultuous life. Born Michelangelo Merisi to humble beginnings, Caravaggio made his mark in Rome at the end of the 16th century thanks to influential patrons, before experiencing a life marked by conflicts, disputes, and a murder conviction. A chaotic trajectory that still fuels the artist’s legend today.

Cinema and audience interaction

At 8:45 pm, the evening continued with the screening of the film “Caravaggio” by Michele Placido, followed by an exchange with the audience. This cinematic work extended the reflections initiated earlier in the evening, providing another perspective on the painter’s life and creation.

The event gathered a large, curious audience eager to discover or rediscover a major figure in art history, in a format that combined knowledge and popular culture. The initiative was praised by the organizers, who thanked the Ciné-Club Cerdagne Capcir, the Font-Romeu casino, and the municipality for their logistical and financial support.

Between film screenings and historical analysis, this evening confirmed the enduring interest of the public in Caravaggio, an artist whose work continues to evoke debates and fascination more than four centuries after his death.
