The parliamentary group Together for the Republic (EPR, formerly Renaissance), led by Gabriel Attal, announced on Tuesday, February 24 via a press release that it has secured the inclusion of its bill (PPL) on the agenda of the National Assembly to establish a special status entity for Alsace. Specifically, Gabriel Attal (deputy of Hauts-de-Seine), Brigitte Klinkert (Haut-Rhin), Olivier Becht (Haut-Rhin), Françoise Buffet (Bas-Rhin), and Charles Sitzenstuhl (Bas-Rhin) stated that, following their initiative, the National Assembly will vote on the creation of an Alsace region on Tuesday, April 7.

“A historic vote for the future of the people of Alsace”

“With our initiative,” emphasized Gabriel Attal, “the Assembly will decide through a historic vote on the future of Alsace. For me, the Alsace region represents both a matter of trust in the Alsatian territory and proximity in our public policies.”

In practical terms, the EPR deputies propose to provide the European Collectivity of Alsace (CEA) with the powers of a region and a department, thereby establishing it as a special status entity (CSP). “The objective is clear,” stressed the five signatory deputies of the press release, “efficiency in public action, proximity with the people of Alsace, and recognition of the region’s historical specificities.”

In their view, this reform would finally simplify the levels of regional and departmental administrative management, which are often complex and distant from local realities, and achieve budgetary savings of “around 80 to 100 million euros per year.”
