Since the capture of President Maduro, Washington and the interim government of Delcy Rodriguez are working to normalize their ties in all areas.

Venezuela has authorized an air evacuation exercise of the US embassy in Caracas, five months after the spectacular American attack that led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, announced Foreign Minister Yvan Gil. The January 3 attack included flights of American planes and helicopters with bombings of many points in the capital and surrounding cities.

“At the request of the US embassy, authorities authorized the realization, on Saturday, May 23, of an evacuation exercise in anticipation of possible medical situations or catastrophic contingencies,” announced Mr. Gil on public television. “As part of the exercise, two aircraft will conduct controlled overflights of the city of Caracas and perform landing operations within the US embassy premises,” he added.

Since the capture of President Maduro, Washington and the interim government of Delcy Rodriguez are working to normalize their ties in all areas. In March, they resumed their diplomatic relations, broken in 2019, and the United States is in the process of reactivating their embassy in Caracas.

Trump relaxes sanctions

Simultaneously, President Donald Trump is gradually relaxing sanctions against Venezuela, which has enacted new laws on hydrocarbons and the mining sector, opening these sectors to private investment in a country with the world’s largest oil reserves.

Symbolizing this rapprochement, Venezuela deported Alex Saab to the United States on Saturday, a man close to the Venezuelan power under Nicolas Maduro. Mr. Saab was arrested during a layover in Cape Verde in 2020 and extradited in 2021 to the United States, which accused him of diverting food aid and money laundering for Mr. Maduro. He was exchanged in December 2023 for ten Americans imprisoned in Venezuela and was appointed minister.
