Tottenham missed the opportunity to secure their place in the Premier League by losing to Chelsea (2-1) on Tuesday evening. They will play for their survival at home against Everton on Sunday. West Ham, who are two points behind Spurs, will face Leeds at the same time.
Chelsea finally ended a seven-game winless streak in the Premier League, while Tottenham missed the chance to secure their place in the top tier of English football. On Tuesday evening at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea and Tottenham competed in a London derby, but it ended in favor of the Blues, who were more efficient in front of goal. They can now dream of Europe thanks to their current eighth place, which means qualification for the next edition of the Conference League.
A draw will be enough for Tottenham on Sunday
Shortly after the quarter-hour mark, Enzo Fernandez gave Callum McFarlane’s men the lead (1-0, 18th minute), before Andrey Santos doubled the advantage in the second half (2-0, 66th minute). Richarlison pulled one back (2-1, 74th minute), but it was too late for Spurs to have a real hope of a draw, which would have meant staying in the Premier League. Defeated by Chelsea, who still have a chance to qualify for the Europa League (just one point behind), Tottenham will play for their survival in the Premier League on Sunday.
Spurs (17th, 38 points) have a two-point lead over the current first team in the relegation zone, West Ham (18th, 36 points). On Sunday, in the 38th and final matchday of the Premier League, Roberto De Zerbi’s team, the former Marseille coach, will host Everton. West Ham will play against Leeds at home in the famous multiplex (5 pm). Spurs can settle for a draw, as they have a significantly better goal difference than the Hammers (-10 compared to -22). Tottenham has not played in the second division for half a century (1977-1978).
