“Who are you to dare speak about films?” In 2026, cinema remains somewhat exclusive. While new music and food critics have broken into social media, the big screen remains protected by guardians of knowledge. Talking about movies on social media is okay, but not for everyone and not in any way.
Recently, experts in cinema, as well as many influencers, seem to have a common bone to pick with the same French content creator who has seen a recent surge in popularity. His name? “Regelegorila,” meaning “king of gorillas” in Romanian, from his love for Peter Jackson’s 2005 film “King Kong.”
In May 2026, “Redge” and his million social media followers stormed the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. Known for his provocative cinema critiques, he enjoys riling up his community.
“I’ve decided to quit the Cannes Film Festival forever (blame it on Quentin Dupieux and his stupid movie).”

“Also stop bothering us with your dumb analyses,” replied an internet user. Such tense exchanges have become part of the creator’s daily life as he turned his cinema passion into a lucrative profession.
If his opinions receive fierce opposition, it’s because “Regelegorila” is accused of specializing in “rage-baiting,” aimed at quickly provoking outrage with polarizing content to boost engagement and cash in.
His success has caught the attention of traditional media, surprised to see this passionate creator face backlash whenever he speaks. Recently, “Konbini” opened its “Video-Club” to him, and “Brut” interviewed him at length.
The Political Turn
He could have lived off his YouTube earnings since 2019. Yet, he completed his studies and ventured into the professional world before fully committing to the internet. This success, built gradually over fifteen years of videos, allowed Regelegorila to declare €183,950 in revenue in 2025, including €86,235 from partnerships.
Although some question his authority on cinema, he proves to be a hard worker, releasing a minimum of five videos per week alongside press screenings and Netflix binges.
Intriguingly, he has recently delved into more explosive topics than cinema critiques, particularly politics. He openly identifies as center-left, critical of the far-right, and actively engages in political discourse.
A recent revelation? “When I saw centrists align with the far-right. For me, it’s a no-go… I have the privilege of having a voice that is heard, so it’s a duty not to say anything. Personally, I’m concerned about the future and I’d like to be on the right side of history,” he told “Brut.”
“As soon as I talk about politics, I lose a thousand subscribers. Every time. The more engaged the content, the more I lose, and that’s okay with me.”

His appealing persona and straightforward approach not only incite reactions but also allow non-film enthusiasts to navigate the movie landscape through his content.
Browsing through his YouTube account reveals a passion for cinema. His community creates a polarized yet engaging environment that mirrors our current societal backdrop.
