From May 19 to 22, the Villeneuve-Bargemon square will host four free outdoor screenings as part of the opening of the Mediterranean 2026 Season. Organized by Les Écrans du Sud with AFLAM, this program highlights films from the Mediterranean basin.
The arrival of sunny days often means outdoor cinema in Marseille. The association Les Écrans du Sud and Aflam (international film meetings) are organizing four free screenings on the Villeneuve-Bargemon square from May 19 to 22.
These events are part of the launch of the Mediterranean 2026 Season, announced by Emmanuel Macron in 2023 to bring forth common cultural projects between all shores of the Mediterranean.
These outdoor screenings at nightfall (9:30 pm) will thus highlight the southern shores of the Mediterranean, from the Atlas to Egypt and Lebanon, with a diverse selection of films.
Road-movie, fantasy, social… A diverse program
On Tuesday, May 19, the program will open with the premiere of Where the Wind Comes From by Amel Guellaty. This road-movie follows two young Tunisians as they head to Djerba in hope of a better life.
On Wednesday, May 20, Animalia by Sofia Alaoui will be screened. Between fantasy and drama, the feature film immerses a young woman in a series of supernatural phenomena in the heart of the Atlas Mountains.
On Thursday, May 21, a new premiere with Only the Rebels by Danielle Abrid. Led by Hiam Abbass, the film tells the love story between a Lebanese-Palestinian woman and a Sudanese migrant in crisis-hit Lebanon.
Finally, on Friday, May 22, the program will end with Alexandria Why? by Youssef Chahine. Made for the centenary of the director’s birth, this classic from 1978 delves into Alexandria in the 1940s through the eyes of a cinema-loving teenager.
