After a successful first third of the season, the string of underperformances that followed with the defeat at home against Dunkerque (0-3, Matchday 11) and the heavy loss against Saint-Étienne (6-0, Matchday 12) clearly felt like a wake-up call. The mere six wins obtained in the last 25 matchdays of the season highlight this. Despite achieving a historic 9th place since their promotion to Ligue 2, the sentiment remains mixed. Average, just like the ranking: Pau finishes 13 points behind the top 5 and narrowly avoids relegation, staying ahead of Laval at the bottom of the table.
The main regrets of the Béarnais this season will undoubtedly be shared with the supporters of the Nouste Camp. So far, Pau FC had often secured their survival thanks to their performances at home. However, this time was the opposite as they only managed to secure 20 points at home compared to 25 away. Pau even endured a ten-match winless streak at home between the victory against Clermont (October 3) and the win against Guingamp (April 17).
The fact that the Pau squad often seemed more comfortable in transition surely weighed heavily. As did the trauma that gradually seemed to settle in the minds of players who were unable to secure three points in matches that were well within their reach, like against Bastia or Grenoble.
