Constellation Energy, one of the world’s largest electricity producers, hopes that American regulators will make a decision next month that will determine when the Three Mile Island nuclear plant can restart, company executives said on Monday.

Constellation aims to restart its nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, now named Crane Clean Energy Center, next year. The plant has faced potential delays of several years due to the overall electrical grid and has appealed to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to address this scheduling issue.

Initial indications from the PJM grid suggested that the Crane nuclear plant may not be able to power the grid until 2031.

FERC could rule in June or July on Constellation’s request to transfer some of its electricity injection rights from its natural gas plant in Eddystone, outside Philadelphia, to the Crane plant, executives said during a quarterly investor conference call.

“I don’t want anyone to think the plant won’t restart sooner,” said CEO Joe Dominguez.

The restart of the plant is part of a contract to power Microsoft’s data centers in the region. No fully closed plant has ever been restarted, but three initiatives to restart reactors are currently underway in the United States, as electricity demand increases due to the expansion of energy-intensive data centers and the electrification of industries and buildings.
