Aviron Bayonnais: Erbi in good shape and a defense still struggling

It was an open secret, just like the maintenance acquired after the defeat against Toulon (52-26) on April 25. The Aviron Bayonnais can no longer mathematically break into the top 6 after their new home defeat against Bordeaux-Bègles (38-40). The goal set by President Philippe Tayeb is still achievable but equally utopian.

To break into the top eight places, synonymous with participation in the Champions Cup, Aviron must surpass Lyon, Castres, La Rochelle, and Toulon, if we look at the current standings, before the match between Racing 92 and Stade Rochelais. However, with upcoming matches in Lyon and at Stade Français, followed by hosting Perpignan, it is unlikely that Aviron will achieve full points and all competitors will collapse. The focus for manager Gerard Fraser is on establishing a strong foundation for next season.

Despite the loss, some players showed improvement, especially Arnaud Erbinartegaray, who scored a double on Saturday, bringing his total to six tries this season. He emerged as a standout player with impressive defensive skills and versatility.

Erbinartegaray’s performance has caught the attention of Fraser, who sees potential for him in various positions on the field. The manager hinted at Erbinartegaray’s possible selection for the French team’s upcoming matches in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.

Sireli Maqala also put on a strong performance, scoring a try in the match against Bordeaux-Bègles.

The Aviron Bayonnais suffered their 12th defeat by 40 points or more.
