The 79th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 12 to May 23. As we prepare for the festivities, Paris Match presents all the films competing for the Palme d’Or. Let’s focus on Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes, who made a splash with “Son of Saul” in 2015.
Collaboration and Resistance are timely themes in cinema. Following Xavier Giannoli’s “The Rays and the Shadows” released last March, two films competing at the 79th Cannes Film Festival are set in France during World War II, including the highly anticipated “Moulin” by Laszlo Nemes.
Laszlo Nemes made waves in 2015 with his debut feature film, “Son of Saul,” set during World War II, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The following year, Nemes was part of the festival’s jury, presided over by George Miller.
In “Moulin,” set in June 1943, Jean Moulin, the leader of the Resistance, is arrested while trying to unify the forces of the Secret Army. Interrogated by Klaus Barbie, the Gestapo chief of Lyon, Moulin is drawn into a relentless confrontation. His final battle against manipulation and brutality begins, with the fate of Free France at stake.
The film features Gilles Lellouche as Jean Moulin, alongside Louise Bourgoin as the Countess De Forez and German actor Lars Eidinger as Klaus Barbie.
Paris Match’s review of the film will be available on Sunday, May 17.
