In Beirut, the EU Commissioner for Equality, Crisis Preparedness, and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, highlighted EU solidarity with Lebanon on Europe Day, May 9, during a 48-hour visit to understand the extent of the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

She emphasized that humanitarian aid (through humanitarian partners and UN agencies) should be provided to all displaced or needy individuals without discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, or origin. In an exclusive interview with “L’Orient-Le Jour” at the Quarantine government hospital, the European Commissioner revealed that the EU’s humanitarian aid volume since March 2, 2026, would reach 300 tons with the upcoming cargo. She emphasized working closely with partners to deliver surgical kits for war victims.

During the visit coinciding with Europe Day, Lahbib met with President Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berry, Ministers of Health and Social Affairs, and various field partners. She stressed the importance of ending the conflict and urged Lebanon to engage in necessary reforms while EU countries continue supporting.

Addressing all parties in the conflict, Lahbib called for ceasefire and urged Hezbollah to relinquish its arsenal and Israel to stop bombings, respecting Lebanon’s territorial integrity. She expressed concern about ongoing violations of international humanitarian law resulting in casualties among aid workers.

Reflecting on the crisis, Lahbib noted the rapid escalation, forcing many into exile within their own country. She emphasized the need for a global perspective in resolving the conflict and highlighted the humanitarian impact, making aid delivery challenging and costly amidst economic crises and resource shortages.

During a press conference, Lahbib emphasized the principles of humanitarian aid, including neutrality, independence, and impartiality, stressing the importance of assisting individuals in need regardless of their background.
