It is currently unknown if this leak is intentional or not. According to a document from the Kremlin’s intelligence services revealed by The Economist, Russia proposed arming Iran with thousands of drones to attack American troops in the Gulf.

In detail, the plan from the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) approved by Vladimir Putin proposed providing Iran with 5,000 short-range drones and an unknown number of satellite-guided systems for longer ranges.

Finally, formal proof

The Kremlin tenant even proposed in Tehran a training on the use of unjammable fiber optics drones against American soldiers. While intelligence sharing between Russia and Iran had already been mentioned, this is the most formal proof revealed to date.

This ten-page document – with six diagrams and a precise map of the rules off the Iranian coasts – would have been drafted in the first six weeks of the war, when the possibility of Donald Trump ordering an invasion of Iran was being considered.

One of the six diagrams in the report shows how Iran should launch swarms of five or six drones to attack American landing craft from concealed positions up to 32 km away.

The plan also proposed supplying Iran with long-range satellite-guided drones equipped with Starlink terminals, or recruiting operators from the approximately 10,000 Iranian students enrolled in Russian universities.
