At just 13 years old, David Lacan-Rus is a name well known in the world of chess. He continues his journey in pursuit of the title of Master, surrounded by his family and with a special coach, since he left C’Chartres Chess at the end of 2025. On April 9th, he achieved his second norm in a closed tournament of masters in Asnières (Hauts-de-Seine). The young Chartres prodigy aims for a third international norm on the chessboard to receive official recognition from the International Chess Federation. Meeting.
The prodigy David Lacan-Rus reached a milestone when he obtained his second international master norm, and his joy was equal to his fatigue after the tournament where he had to pay “the price” against his nine opponents. This tournament in Asnières-sur-Seine was an invitation he received after requesting it from the organizers. Now, a new closed tournament awaits him from May 10th to 17th in Normandy. “If I achieve the third norm, I will have the [International Master] title,” explains the middle school student, who has been dreaming of it for a month.
If obtaining this international recognition is at stake, David Lacan-Rus does not forget his other goal: “play my best game and compete against the best of my generation” with another competition in sight: the U14 World Championship in Montesilvano, Italy, in June, just a month away.
Enrolled in 4th grade at Sainte-Marie de Chartres School, he has had a modified schedule since 6th grade, with a high-level athlete status – a unique arrangement in France. This support allows him to be well surrounded and perform at the highest level. His achievements: U10 world champion in 2022, as well as a bronze medalist in the U14 World Championship, already in Montesilvano.
