The United States has praised the “sturdy” relations with the Vatican on Thursday after Secretary of State Marco Rubio was received by Pope Leon XIV with the clear goal of easing tensions following Donald Trump’s harsh criticisms.

The meeting highlighted the strength of the relationship between the United States and the Holy See, as well as their common commitment to peace and human dignity, said State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott in a statement.

Pope Leon XIV and the U.S. Secretary of State had a “friendly and constructive” meeting of over 45 minutes, according to an anonymous source from the State Department.

Rubio, a devout Catholic, was accompanied by his wife and was received at the Apostolic Palace with honors usually reserved for heads of state and government, reflecting the Vatican’s emphasis on reconciliation.

The two officials discussed the situation in the Middle East and “common interests for the Western hemisphere,” including the situation in Cuba.

Rubio later met with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to discuss ongoing humanitarian efforts and initiatives for lasting peace in the Middle East, reaffirming the strong partnership between the U.S. and the Holy See in support of religious freedom.

Context: Marco Rubio’s visit with Pope Leon XIV aimed to mend relations strained by past criticisms from former President Donald Trump.

Fact Check: Marco Rubio previously met with Pope Leon XIV in May 2025 along with then-Vice President J.D. Vance, a converted Catholic.

Further Discussions: The meeting also covered the topic of Cuba, with discussions on humanitarian aid and the Vatican’s historical involvement in Cuban diplomacy. Rubio, of Cuban descent, led efforts under the Trump administration to pressure the communist government in Cuba.
