On May 4th remains a special date for fans of the saga created by George Lucas. The worldwide nod, known as “May the Fourth” (spoken as “May the Force”), celebrates a franchise that is slowly approaching 50 years. Decades of passion but also of questioning, and sometimes, of weariness. While Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to be released on May 20th, the franchise enters a new era, seven years after the release of its last film.

Since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the franchise has been scarce in cinemas. Despite a solid box office performance (over a billion dollars), the mixed critical and public reception marked a turning point. At the same time, The Mandalorian series quickly captured fans’ attention, almost overshadowing the cinema.

With memorable characters like Grogu, the series has managed to refresh interest in the universe, while establishing new consumption habits. “We are in a pivotal period for Star Wars, it’s been seven years since we had a film,” analyzes Arnaud Da Costa Pereira, responsible for news at the Star Wars Universe site, which has over 30,000 fans. “In the meantime, we’ve had an incredible number of series, with varying quality.”

Context: Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the new Star Wars content and discussing the evolution of the franchise.

Fact Check: The Mandalorian series has been well received by fans and has contributed to sustaining interest in the Star Wars universe.

Fans still present, but elsewhere

Despite mixed signals for the return of the saga to the big screen with The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, initial box office projections in the United States suggest a slower start than expected. This is partly attributed to the saturation of series, creating a sense that the audience needs to catch up before seeing a film.

Victor Dumery, a fan of the saga for 25 years, also points out the increasing complexity of the universe, which can make it difficult for new viewers to enter the stories. Nevertheless, each new film is considered an event, emphasizing the inseparable link between the saga and the big screen.

Fans still demanding

One thing is certain, the demand from fans remains high. “We have a community that follows everything closely,” highlights Arnaud Da Costa Pereira. Series have enriched the universe but also created divisions. Despite the attachment fans have to the saga, it is important to rebuild trust with the audience.

Overall, it’s challenging to envision a complete decline for the cinemas. The strategy for Star Wars by Disney seems to be evolving, with more controlled budgets and the presence of big stars like Ryan Gosling in the film planned for 2027. “Perhaps the Star Wars franchise alone is no longer enough to attract.”

Context: Fans continue to express their views on the evolution of Star Wars content and the changing landscape of the franchise’s production.

Fact Check: The response from fans and critics to recent Star Wars productions has been mixed, leading to discussions about the future direction of the franchise.
