Victoria Mas, the daughter of iconic French singer Jeanne Mas, has carved out a successful career as a talented writer. Describing herself as a “distracted singer,” she found her calling in the world of literature rather than music. Growing up surrounded by books, Victoria developed a passion for writing from a young age.
Born in Le Chesnay, she spent time in the south of France, Hauts-de-Seine, and even California before returning to her homeland. Despite her American adventures, Victoria felt a strong pull to France and the powerful French language. It was during her time in the US that she began to understand and embrace her French roots.
After facing rejection due to her overly autobiographical writing style, Victoria turned to translation to support herself. In 2010, she published her first book in English dedicated to her love for French cuisine. However, it was her novel “Le Bal des folles” released in 2019 that propelled her to literary stardom. Based on a true story, the book sheds light on the plight of “hysterical” women in the 19th-century Salpêtrière asylum.
Her book garnered critical acclaim and several prestigious awards, leading to a film adaptation by Mélanie Laurent. Despite initial setbacks, Victoria’s perseverance paid off as she secured her place among France’s literary elite. Proud of her daughter’s success, Jeanne Mas expressed her admiration for Victoria’s courage and talent as a writer.
Victoria Mas has since released two more novels, “Un miracle” in 2022 and “L’Orpheline du Temple” in 2025. Delving into forgotten or lesser-known historical events, Victoria’s writing provides insight into contemporary society and allows her to explore intimate narratives from the past. Her mother, Jeanne Mas, remains a strong supporter, proud not only of Victoria’s literary achievements but also of the woman she has become.
