The Fijian Rugby Federation is preparing to create “Fiji Latui,” a team based in the Basque Country that will bring together the best expatriate players in Europe. This is a strategic project to structure a talent pool that has yet to be fully utilized.
According to our sources, the Fijian Rugby Federation is set to take a new step in its international development strategy with the creation of an unprecedented team called “Fiji Latui.” While not yet officially confirmed, the project is well underway behind the scenes and could be launched in the coming weeks. This episodic team, halfway between an “A” selection and a Barbarians-type team, is likely to be based in the Basque Country – a choice currently being debated between Biarritz and Bilbao. The team aims to bring together a portion of the numerous Fijian players scattered throughout European professional and amateur leagues in a single location. It is estimated that close to 500 Fijian rugby players are currently playing in leagues across the Old Continent. This is a substantial pool of talent, but one that the Federation acknowledges is not being fully tracked.
In this context, “Fiji Latui” would serve as a tool for structuring and talent identification. The goal is twofold: to provide a competitive platform for these players while strengthening ties with the national team, the Flying Fijians.
The choice of the Basque Country as the team’s home base is not random. The region, deeply rooted in rugby culture, offers suitable infrastructure, proximity to major French and Spanish professional leagues, and logistical access to all of Europe. Discussions are underway with local stakeholders to establish a lasting base camp capable of hosting training camps, matches, and player development activities for those who have been overlooked by the Federation.
Beyond the sporting aspect, “Fiji Latui” also addresses economic and organizational challenges. By partially establishing in Europe, the Fijian Federation aims to optimize the management of its international players, reduce travel constraints, and enhance its image in lucrative markets. In this regard, the Federation is in advanced talks with two European multinational companies to help finance the project. Ultimately, “Fiji Latui” could become a major strategic lever in the approach to upcoming international events, including the new Nations Championship in the medium term.
