Swiss skier Camille Rast took the lead of the giant slalom in Are after the first run, while American Mikaela Shiffrin, leader of the overall World Cup standings, made a big mistake that relegated her to a disappointing 12th place. This is the last giant slalom of the season before the finals scheduled in a week in Lillehammer.
Rast leads Austrian Julia Scheib by 11 hundredths and American Paula Moltzan by 56 hundredths. German Emma Aicher is in sixth place, one second 26 behind the best time.
Shiffrin’s costly mistake
Mikaela Shiffrin, who was performing well on the initial sections of the course, lost over two and a half seconds before the finish. Despite this major error, she managed to keep her skis on the track and finishes two seconds 29 hundredths behind the leader. The second run is scheduled for 1:00 PM Paris time.
The battle for the small globe
Camille Rast and Julia Scheib are engaged in a tight battle for the crystal globe of the discipline. The Austrian currently has about 100 points ahead, but the Swiss skier is also in contention for the overall World Cup standings.
