The world spent nearly 2,900 billion dollars ($2,280 billion Swiss francs) on military expenditures in 2025, marking an eleventh consecutive year of growth amid multiple conflicts, according to a report released on Monday. The three main contributors— the United States, China, and Russia— accounted for more than half of the total, at $1,480 billion ($1,163.5 billion Swiss francs).

The increase reached 2.9% in one year despite a decrease in American military spending, as reported by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).

“This decrease was largely offset by progressions in Europe and Asia in a new year marked by wars and escalating tensions,” explained researcher Lorenzo Scarazzato from Sipri to AFP.

“The military burden”— the share of the world’s GDP spent on military expenditures— is the highest since 2009. “Everything indicates that the world feels less secure and is thinking more about strengthening its armed forces to deal with the global context,” noted the researcher.
