In May 2017, nine years ago, Emmanuel Macron was elected President of the French Republic after the second round of the presidential election against Marine Le Pen. A week later, on May 14, he officially took office following the handover ceremony at the Elysée with his predecessor François Hollande, who led France from 2012 to 2017. Emmanuel Macron did not move into the presidential palace alone. He moved in with Brigitte Macron, the woman he married on October 20, 2007, at the town hall of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. Since their move, the presidential couple have faced many challenges. Brigitte Macron opened up about the cyberbullying she has experienced over the years in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
Brigitte Macron shared her struggles with cyberbullying and the impact it has had on her life before and after becoming the President’s wife. She mentioned how her life used to be normal with kids, a job, and ups and downs like everyone else. She reflected on the intensity of the past ten years she spent in this position and expressed sadness at the darkness, foolishness, and malice she has encountered. She admitted to feeling sadder than ever before. Brigitte Macron keeps a private journal to process her negative emotions, sharing that it is sometimes challenging for her to see the blue sky and that she experiences moments of pessimism that she did not have before.
In addition to maintaining her intimate journal, Brigitte Macron has dedicated herself to various causes dear to her heart to keep herself occupied and find balance amid daily pressures. She spends a significant amount of time with LIVE and the Hospitals Foundation, which allows her to stay connected to real issues and give purpose to her public role. Brigitte Macron also prioritizes physical activity by doing morning gym sessions, biking on weekends, and taking an hour-long daily walk to avoid feeling trapped, as recommended by her first cabinet director, Pierre-Olivier Costa. Movement is her best therapy.
