Cinema fans will be delighted. Since Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Netflix offers its subscribers the chance to (re)discover a cult film. Its name: “The Sting”. Released in theaters on April 19, 1974, this police comedy directed by George Roy Hill and starring two Hollywood legends, Paul Newman (“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, “Message in a Bottle”), and Robert Redford (“Out of Africa”, “The Horse Whisperer”), quickly earned its title of “cinema masterpiece.”

The plot? In Chicago, in 1936, Johnny Hooker and his accomplice Coleman unknowingly steal the money transporter from Doyle Lonnegan, a dangerous gangster from New York. Coleman is then killed by the latter’s gang, and Hooker takes refuge with Henry Gondorff, a scam specialist. They decide to avenge Coleman’s death by devising a vast scam to bankrupt Lonnegan. To do this, Hooker convinces the gangster that he can obtain race results before they are officially known.

“For two hours and nine minutes, we revel,” wrote “Télérama” at the time. “A genre masterpiece,” praised “France Soir.” A critical success, “The Sting” won no less than 6 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director in 1974. The film had accumulated over 4.15 million admissions in France.
