Three different political polls show a decline in public approval for Donald Trump’s handling of the US economy, immigration, and the Iran conflict. This poses a challenge for Republican candidates aligned with Trump as the US midterm elections loom just six months away.
The polls conducted by Reuters-Ipsos, Strength in Numbers-Verasight, and AP-NORC indicate that the president’s approval ratings are in the mid-30s, specifically at 36%, 35%, and 33% respectively, nearing his lowest numbers.
A recent AP-NORC poll showed that 70% of Americans view the economy negatively and believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. Approval for Trump’s management of the economy has dropped to 30%, down from 38% in March. Furthermore, 72% believe the country is going in the wrong direction, a sentiment unchanged since February. Only 23% approve of his handling of the cost of living, while 76% disapprove.
According to a Reuters-IPSOS poll, Trump’s policies on migrant deportations may harm Republican candidates in the upcoming congressional elections in November. The poll revealed that 52% of Americans are less likely to support a candidate who backs Trump’s deportation approach, compared to 42% who are more likely to do so.
Amidst these findings, even among independents, there is a divide on the issue, with 57% preferring candidates who oppose Trump’s deportations and 32% supporting those who back his policies.
Trump’s immigration policy, once supported by 50% of the country, now only has a 40% approval rating following clashes between immigration enforcement agents and protesters earlier this year.
An NBC News poll indicated that Trump’s personal approval rating has reached a second-term low of 37%, with 63% disapproving of his performance as president. Republican support for Trump remains at 83%, but his handling of the economy saw a decrease in strong approval from 58% to 52%.
Despite some Republican base challenges, the NBC poll shows that defending their majorities in Congress will be difficult, as one-third of Americans believe the country is on the right track while two-thirds feel it is on the wrong track.
Economic concerns remain a top priority for voters, with 29% citing it as the most important issue, followed by threats to democracy at 24%, healthcare at 12%, and crime and safety at 10%.
Regarding the war with Iran, 67% disapprove of Trump’s handling, with only one-third approving. The disapproval rate is even higher among Democrats and independents, with almost all Democrats and 82% of independents disapproving, but 74% of Republicans approving.
A majority of 61% believe the US should refrain from further military action in Iran.
On the topic of voter identification requirements, Trump and the Republican party find more support, with 75% of Americans backing government-issued photo IDs and 61% in favor of including proof of citizenship in these documents.
