The White House announced that the US Navy seized an Iranian cargo ship that was attempting to break the blockade of Iranian ports. According to President Donald Trump, the US Navy fired on the Iranian ship named Touska after it refused to comply with orders to stop. The ship’s engine room was targeted to immobilize it, and now the US Marines have control of the vessel.
President Trump emphasized that the Touska is already subject to sanctions by the US Treasury Department. The incident occurred in the Gulf of Oman, and the US Central Command stated that they had warned the crew to evacuate the engine room before damaging the ship’s propulsion system with shellfire. Marines then boarded the vessel, which remains under US control.
Iran has vowed to retaliate against the US Navy’s actions, calling it an act of armed piracy. Iranian military forces have pledged to take retaliatory measures in response to what they deemed as a provocative act by the US military.
Since the US-imposed blockade of Iranian ports on April 13th, American forces have reportedly forced 25 commercial ships to either turn back or redirect to an Iranian port. The tensions in the region continue to escalate as both countries remain at odds over the maritime situation.
