Open for a while, closed again: the Strait of Hormuz, or the limits of Donald Trumps diplomacy

DÉCRYPTAGE – After a brief hope for opening, the blockade, both Iranian and American, remains in effect. Negotiations between Iran and the United States are set to resume in Islamabad, under the auspices of Pakistan.

The Strait of Hormuz is once again closed. In less than 24 hours, the triumphant statements of Donald Trump announcing the resumption of maritime traffic have once again proven premature. Iran, which first proclaimed the reopening of the strait to navigation on Friday, reversed its decision on Saturday after Trump clarified that the American blockade of Iran would remain “fully in force” until the final resolution of the conflict.

The Iranians reminded the American president that negotiations work in both directions. “It is stated that as long as the United States does not cease to obstruct the full freedom of navigation of ships to and from Iran, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain under strict control and in its previous state,” a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards declared.

Speedboats, warning shots

To support this announcement, the Iranians opened fire on two ships passing through the strait on Saturday. [Context: There is a paywall for further access to the content.]
